Hotel Porta Antigua

Hotel Porta Antigua

This hotel is definitely part of the history of Antigua Guatemala. Just from few years ago is part of the Porta hotels and before that was managed by a nice Guatemalan family. Part of the staff had been working at the hotel for more than 20 years, those are people that just love what they do and you really can note it.

This is my favorite one if we talk about having brunch in the whole Guatemala.

Here some of my pics:

I have already talk about this at the post Breakfast in Antigua Guatemala: Where to Go but someone advised me it will be more useful to place them in different posts, so here is it, it contains exactly the same of that post, in case of new comments about this place, I´ll write a new post.

La Fonda de la Calle Real

La Fonda de la Calle Real Antigua

This is a real classic. Opened in 1975 and specialized in Guatemalan typical food, it´s considered as one of the best Guatemalan typical food restaurants. Decorated as if it would be founded some centuries ago (with and old kitchen and rustic chairs), also owns part of its charm to the walls that are “decorated” with quite a lot of proverbs written there.

Here some pics of the place:

It´s a place you have to go at least once, of course also has great breakfasts, but maybe I would recommend, in case you have to choose, to go there for a formal meal instead.

I have already talk about this at the post Breakfast in Antigua Guatemala: Where to Go but someone advised me it will be more useful to place them in different posts, so here is it, it contains exactly the same of that post, in case of new comments about this place, I´ll write a new post.

Hotel Soleil Antigua

Hotel Soleil Antigua

For me was the Ramada Hotel, as far as it was part of that hotels chain, but some years ago it changed into Soleil.

It´s like a classic in Antigua but I haven´t found videos of it, I´m afraid.

Here some pics:

Nais: a Nice Place for a Nice Breakfast! :D

Nais

This place is already a classic. They started with quite good lunch and dinner options and where one of the firsts to give breakfast options as well. Just give a look at the menu and you will find this is a worth to go there:

I just should puntualized that the last times I went to eat for lunch or dinner there, the food quality wasn´t as good as before, but the prices were higher! :/ But for breakfast it´s still quite good and I defenetely recommend it! :D

On November 2008 they opened the first Aquarium Restaurant of Latin America. I had visited it in February 2009 and yes, it´s beautiful… but you have to pay to enter to the restaurant and if you want a better view they have a VIP option where you have to pay even more for having the privilege of eating there. Ok, the Aquarium is really nice and something quite original… and yes, I understand the maintenance of such a place should be expensive… I just felt expensive the prices they have for that. But it´s a worth view and a nice place.

Here an interview of the history of the group and how they got the idea of placing the Aquarium: (in Spanish)

Here the second part:

Here some views of the result:

Casa Santo Domingo: my Ideal Resting Place

Hotel Casa Santo Domingo

This is definitely my favorite hotel in the whole world. Ok, at least of the part of the world I know! :P Actually it´s a 5 stars Museum-Hotel. They had rebuilt a colonial convent, but taking care of conserving the original style and even the original master pieces of the convent are exhibited at the museum part (but also decorating rooms and corridors). It´s full with quite original details… like having the swimming pool at the old fountain (I mean: you swim inside a fountain! But it had been rebuilt as swimming pool).

Here some of my own pics:

Here a video with the story of the hotel (I´m afraid it´s in Spanish):

In this one you can see a lot of different areas of the hotel (as well in Spanish but you don´t need to understand the dialog to appreciate the beauty of the place):

Its restaurant had win a lot of international prices, so, it´s always a great idea to eat there! :D My favorite: ravioli.

Finca Filadelfia: a Coffee Plantation Converted into a Resort, SPA, Restaurant and Place to Canopy

Filadelfia Coffee Resort & SPA

This is a coffee farm where lately also contains a hotel and a restaurant. The owners are really visionaries and had included interesting activities like canopy, bird watching tours, mule rides and coffee tours… my only one complain is about the prices… very, very, very high ones! :( But it´s a great place for going to eat, also with very good breakfasts! :D

Some pics of Finca Filadelfia:

Here a video about the canopy at Finca Filadelfia:

Luisa de Xicotencatl: from Indian Princess to a Tasteful Kitchen

Doña Luisa de Xicotencatl

The name of the place is taken from the name of an Indian Princess gave by her father to Pedro de Alvarado (Spanish Conqueror of Guatemala), not exactly as a wife (afterwards he has his Spanish legal wife), but actually they both had a daughter…. But that´s another story! ;)

This cafeteria is famous due the house it´s situated, a quite nice colonial house with a big garden, and also due the food that has a remarked European style (I think the owners are from Europe… maybe from Germany). They make their own bread and also have a store selling their delicious bread.

To go there on weekends to take the breakfast is a real classic!

I´m afraid I have no pics of their breakfasts and I didn´t found at internet, but here some of the restaurant:

Kape Paulinos: my Very Favorite in Tecpán

Kape Paulinos

It´s situated at the road, in Tecpan, at the side of Katok.

It´s a nice place to taste typical Guatemalan food. Actually this is my favorite one of that area.

A video giving a perfect idea of what to find there:

An interview with the owners talking about the history and the specialties that you can find here:

And some pics:

La Cabaña Suiza: Great Food in a Haven of Peace!

La Cabaña Suiza

It´s situated out of the city, at the road going from Guatemala to Antigua Guatemala, at the mountains. They offer hotel and cafeteria services, taking care of the gardens in a very special way, that´s part of what made them famous.

The goal of the cafeteria is to give real Swiss food options, but as usual, for breakfast, they had to offer Guatemalan´s style food to have success.

It´s really magical to go there, also you can appreciate a nice view of the city.

Here some of the pics they have at their web:

This is an international food restaurant that also had added some years ago the breakfast service to their options. Also a great result! :D Here an example of what you can get at their breakfasts:

Sarita

Sarita

They started selling ice creams in 1948. Years later they discovered a place, Escuintla, which was in the middle of the rout going from Guatemala City to the beach, in a very hot place, so, they placed an ice cream shop there plus a hotel with swimming pool and a cafeteria… ;) Soon it became into an obligated stop for travelers going to the beach. Some years ago they decided to open restaurants at Guatemala City and it was a whole success and of course, they included breakfasts.

I should say this is not one of my favorite places in Guatemala but definitely their ice creams are really good and a success like they had is something to recognize, that´s why I included it here :D.

I´m afraid the web is giving troubles and I haven´t find pics to share with you, but at least I found this video:

La Palace, Guatemala: the Best Black Forest I Have Ever Tasted!

La Palace

Wondering I didn´t find anything about this cake shop in internet. :( Definitely a real pity! This is a place that was there since I remember. When I was a kid to have a birthday cake from this cake shop was even a kind of wealthy sign. They also had quite interesting salty things for snack time, like the greatest vol au vents I had tried in my entire life! :D With the time they also incorporated breakfasts… but I should say if Igo there, no matter the time of the day, I would prefer to eat a vol au vent or/and a cake. The most famous cake they have is the Black Forest cake.

Addresses of some of their cake shops: Paseo Miraflores Z-11, (502) 23840771; 10 Calle 3-40 Zona 10, (502) 23313008; Blvd. Vista Hermosa 21-71 Z-15, (502) 23857952; CAlz. Aguilar Batres 44-22 Zona 11, (502) 24791718; Centro Comercial Zona 4 Niv. 2, (502) 23352261.

Patsy: Delicious Cakes!

Pastelería Patsy

They start selling cakes in 1971. Since I remember, everybody in Guatemala City always knew they made the best strawberries and cream cake of the city. With the time they added to the menu salty food as well. Lately they offer a great variety of breakfasts as well!

Here what you can find at their breakfasts:

And here their cakes! :D

Katok: a Tipical Stop on the Road

Katok

This is a Guatemalan typical food restaurant that had started in Tecpan, at the side of a road, in 1961. With the civil war it had been burnt in 1981 but in 1983 part of the owner´s family started to offer part of the products in a small market place at the side of the same road. In 1988 they finally reopened the restaurant again and now they have 2 more restaurants at Guatemala City. Anyway to take the breakfast at the one in Tecpan remins a classic when people go to Sololá or Quetzaltenango in a car.

I have already talk about this at the post Breakfast in Guatemala: Where to Eat (Second part) but someone advised me it will be more useful to place them in different posts, so here is it, it contains exactly the same of that post, in case of new comments about this place, I´ll write a new post.

La Estancia: a Great Place for Eating no Matter the Time of the Day.

La Estancia

This is a steak restaurant, Argentinean style that lately also offers breakfasts… and I should say with a quite excellent result! :)) They have a complete breakfast menu, but actually is better to take the buffet that contains:

And I could say you also can find the following desserts at breakfast as a good excuse to present them here... but the case is they are DELICIOUS! so no excuse is needed to place the pic here... ;P My favorite one: Babarua... mmmmmmmmmm!!!!

Here an old ad:

(Yeaph! I know! No breakfast there… but… how not to fall in the temptation of adding it here!?) ;P

Saúl E. Mendez: from dressing with class to eating with class

Saúl E. Mendez

This chain started in 1953 as men cloth store… how it adds the restaurant and cafeteria concept to that? Well, there´s not exactly an explanation but it happened in 1998 and just with small stands selling crêpes and European style hot beverages, it was so successful so they decided to work more deep in that way. They keep on the line of giving European style food (that doesn´t mean to follow up extremely the European customs, they adapt the food style to Guatemalan´s customs and preferences) and they really created something nice, different and worth to try! :D

Here an example of what you can find at their menu for breakfast:

Scrabble Tourney in Leon: Scrabble Girona celebrating

As I mentioned, the Scrabble Tourney in Leon was full with great moments (and not only at the tourney itself). :D

My club, Scrabble Girona, had a lot of reasons why to celebrate: Patxi winner of the classic but also the duplicate modes. Ivette got the third place and Susanna got the first place of the C group. That´s how we celebrate it! :D

After the tourney Juan Carlos Ayala took us to eat a delicious stew from Leon! I hardly recommend it, it´s at the restaurant Sorrento. Being there, Santi told us the story of the spaceship that Spain sent to the moon:

I´m afraid the relation is just in Spanish.

Oh yes! I love the way we started the year! :D

New Year´s Eve in Leon: final part

On January first we awake when we wanted. We had for breakfast the great tiramisu done by Pochola.

For lunch Montse made her delicious Escudella, she even had the nice detail of doing it with alphabet soup! :D Pochola done a magnific Fillet Wellington and also leftovers of the dinner. (We had turkey for the whole weekend!).

After lunching, David, Susanna, Curro and I went to walk a bit around Leon´s City Center, the rest stayed at home playing.

The day before David and Susanna had a “tour” with their friend at the City Center as well, so they were our guides! :P here part of the beauties we saw in our tour:

Royal Collegiate Church of St Isidore of Seville, León:

The Cathedral:

We went to drink something to warm us into the pub "Big John´s Jazz Club" that has the specialty of playing just jazz music of the 40´s to the 70´s.

After that we continue with our tour:

The Bethelem:

Where we also did the “asking for a wish ritual”

The Leon´s raised-relief map:

We were a while watching the audiovisual presentation that Caja de España played at Botines, a Gaudi house:

We went trough the Xmas market and turned back to the flat… where we found Montse, Gloria, Pochola and Topo locked in! And not… it wasn´t a punishment due the night before! (or well, I really don´t know… you see, the last one locking the door was Patxi!) ;P He said the point was that we should lock the door or it opens so easily, so, when he went out, he just forgot nobody of them had a key as well! :D

We played a bit, take the dinner (a salad done with the leftovers, a great Spanish omelet done by Patxi and pantumaca done a bit by all of us) some of us went to sleep a bit early… we had a tourney the next day!

New Year´s Eve Party in León, Second Part

After our route at the “Barrio Húmedo” in León, where we went to the bars: La Jouja, La Trébede, Hotel París, El Flechazo, El Tizón, and la Taberna la Ribera, we went back home to rest a bit before midnight. ;P

The dinner, as the rest of foods we have done at the flat, were absolutely great and that was simple due each one did what knows was our best dish. Actually, that´s why from next week and on and will also include some of those recipes in this blog. The menu of New Year´s Eve dinner was: shrimps with champagne done by Gloria, salmon rolls and salmon with onions and capers done by Curro, Parma ham brought by Topo, turkey and rice done by me. Pochola had done a tiramisu as desert, but we were so full, with no place even for whispering! So, we left it for breakfast.

We spent the night reminding and singing, enjoying the night. We stop for a while for going to the living room to take the grapes, hear the bells on tv and to give the hugs. After that we continue enjoying the dinner.

Here some images to remember:

After the dinner we went to the living room again to watch the videos of that afternoon and then… I had my first Scrabble game of the year with David! ;P He won, but I didn´t let that fact to influence me! :D

(To be continued).

New Year´s Eve Party in León

My Scrabble Club, the Scrabble Girona, organized a New Year´s Eve party in León, as far as we had gone for the tourney, that took place on Jan 2nd. and 3rd., renting a flat for 10 people.

Curro and I went in a car with Topo on Dec. 30th. at night. Montse, Patxi, Ma. Paz Yillera (Pochola from now on) and Gloria were already there. The ride was ok, nothing special to talk about, but a flash that shocked Topo for the rest of the night. We had a bit of troubles finding a parking place to left the car, but finally all ok.

Immediately after arriving, we had to go to the supermarket. It´s amazing how cheap is to buy out of Madrid! :P After finishing at the supermarket and to make honor to the originality of our group, the guys went home to prepare the diner while the girls went to have a drink in a bar close to home. What a nice pasta Patxi made!

You won´t believe it, but that night we didn´t play Scrabble… but Rummycub and Scenne it!. My team (Montse, Curro and I) won 2 times to the rival team (Gloria, Pochola and Topocholo). We went early to bed… at 3.00 a.m.! :D

On 31st. we woke up when each one wanted, we had pantumaca for breakfast and coffee. David and Susanna arrived that morning, at 6.00 a.m., they traveled in a night train.

With just 1 bathroom at the flat, it was really amazing to release that in the whole adventure we didn´t have troubles with the turns at the shower or similar, we just had a line at the mornings, but all the rest was like if we would be less at the flat.

Juan Carlos Ayala invited us to drink something at the city center of León, at the Barrio Húmedo to be precise (the translation would be something alike “the Damp Block”) (yes, I know, the name sounds like a joke, but believe me, that´s the real name) :) Believe me, it was marvelous to find places where you can have a wine and a bar snack for 1 euro, you see, with 5 euros you already had eat and drink enough as for being “happy”. Of course the group enjoyed the afternoon quite well, here some images:

(To be continued).
